Question
Is zakat obligatory on illegally obtained wealth or on a debt that the debtor has denied?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: Zakat is not obligatory on stolen money unless there is proof of it, or a debt that the debtor denies. However, if it is found after years, it should only be given zakat for the year in which it was found. As mentioned in the explanation of Al-Wiqayah, p. 208, and God knows best.
