Question
A woman inherited a piece of land from her father and wished to own its value in cash instead of the land. She then agreed with her sister to sell the land for a price, and the transfer took place in 2016. She has not yet received the price. Is she obligated to pay Zakat on her wealth since that time even if she has not yet received the price? Is there also Zakat on the land, knowing that the land produces fruits and Zakat on the fruits is paid annually?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: The zakat of the land is from its fruits, as is well known, and the price is a debt owed to it by its sister. If she thinks that her sister will pay her, she must give zakat for all the previous years when she receives it. If she thinks that her sister will not pay her, and then she does pay her, she only gives zakat for the year in which she is paid. And God knows best.
