I say, and with God's success: If it was before sunrise, Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory; if it was after, it is not obligatory. This is based on his saying (peace be upon him): 'Your fasting is on the day you fast, and your breaking of the fast is on the day you break your fast,' as mentioned in Jami' al-Tirmidhi 3: 80, and he deemed it good, and in Sunan al-Daraqutni 2: 164: 'Any time of your breaking of the fast is on the day you break your fast.' The time of breaking the fast is specified to the day of Eid, as it is added to the day, and the addition indicates specification. The necessity of the time for breaking the fast is evident in the day; otherwise, all nights are the same regarding breaking the fast, and the specification does not appear. Thus, it is clarified that what is meant by Zakat al-Fitr is the charity of the day of Eid, and the charity is added to the day of Eid, which is the reason for its obligation. Refer to: Al-Wiqayah p. 260, and Fath Bab al-'Inayah 1: 554, and Al-Hadiyyah al-'Alaiyyah p. 241, and God knows best.
