Zakat for Those with Deferred Debt

Question
I own the nisab of zakat but I have deferred debt, do I owe zakat?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: One of the conditions for the obligation of zakat is that the obligated Muslim must be free of debt. Zakat is not obligatory on a debtor to the extent that their wealth is encumbered by debt. There is no difference between deferred and immediate debt in this regard. You must deduct the amount of this debt from the wealth you have. If the wealth remaining after the debt reaches the nisab amount, you must pay zakat on the surplus only; otherwise, there is no zakat due from you. And God knows best.
