It is recommended for him: First: The response: to say what the muezzin says; for Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When you hear the call to prayer, say what the muezzin says," in Sahih al-Bukhari 1: 221, and Sahih Muslim 1: 288, except in the phrase: "Hayya 'ala-s-Salah, Hayya 'ala-l-Falah"; for he should say in its place: "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah al-'Aliy al-'Azim"; because repeating that resembles imitation and mockery. Likewise, when the muezzin says: "As-Salah khayrun min an-nawm"; the listener does not repeat it, but says: "Sadaqta wa bararta," or something that earns him reward; for Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When the muezzin says: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, and one of you says: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, then he says: Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, he says: Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, then he says: Ashhadu anna Muhammadur-Rasulullah, he says: Ashhadu anna Muhammadur-Rasulullah, then he says: Hayya 'ala-s-Salah, he says: La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah, then he says: Hayya 'ala-l-Falah, he says: La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah, then he says: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, he says: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, then he says: La ilaha illa Allah, he says: La ilaha illa Allah from his heart, he enters Paradise," in Sahih Muslim 1: 289. Second: Not to engage in anything during the call to prayer and the iqamah except for the response: even if he is reciting the Quran, he should stop and focus on listening and responding, and he should not respond to the call during learning and teaching, eating, sexual relations, or relieving himself, and the one in a state of major ritual impurity (junub) responds, but not the menstruating woman or the one who has just given birth; due to their inability to respond actively. Third: To invoke blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) after the call to prayer and to send prayers upon him: for Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When you hear the muezzin, say what he says, then send blessings upon me, for whoever sends blessings upon me, Allah sends ten blessings upon him, then ask Allah to grant me the wasilah, for it is a rank in Paradise that is not appropriate except for one of Allah's servants, and I hope that I am that one. Whoever asks for me the wasilah, my intercession becomes permissible for him," in Sahih Muslim 1: 288, and Sunan al-Tirmidhi 5: 586. And Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever says when he hears the call: O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the established prayer, grant Muhammad the wasilah and the virtue, and raise him to the praised station which You have promised him, my intercession becomes permissible for him on the Day of Resurrection," in Sahih al-Bukhari 1: 222, and in another narration: "Indeed, You do not break Your promise," in Sunan al-Bayhaqi al-Kabir 1: 410. Fourth: The standing of the imam and the congregation when the one making the iqamah says: Hayya 'ala-s-Salah: because it is a command to turn towards it, it is recommended to hasten to it, and it is legislated for the imam and the congregation with him to pray after he finishes saying: Qad qāmatiṣ-Ṣalah; so that the muezzin catches the beginning of the prayer.
