What is the ruling for someone who begins the prayer voluntarily while facing a direction other than the Qibla?

He is not required to make up the prayer; because starting the prayer is not valid at all, as facing the Qibla is a condition for the validity of the prayer. If this condition is missed, starting the prayer is not valid. See Al-Kifayah 1: 237, and Naf' Al-Mufti 241.
