If a group of people prayed together on a dark night and sought the Qibla, and each one of them faced the direction they believed to be correct, and no one knew in which direction the Imam faced?

Their prayers are valid, provided that no one knows that the imam is not behind him. See: Sharh Al-Wiqayah, p. 143.
