Question
Our house is rented, and we haven't paid the rent for three months. My husband has a mobile phone shop, but there is no business. Thank God our situation is somewhat stable. The question is: Do we have to pay Zakat knowing that my husband has a debt of 13,000 dinars?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: Zakat is obligatory for anyone who possesses the nisab of zakat that exceeds their essential needs for housing, furniture, a car, and others, and they do not have debts greater than the money they possess, for example. A debtor who has surplus wealth beyond their debt equivalent to the amount of zakat is obligated to pay zakat, and God knows best.
