Zakat on the Debtor
My uncle borrowed (15) thousand dinars from my father four years ago. Is there a zakat obligation on this money? Knowing that there is an intention to repay, but due to living conditions, it is difficult to repay the debt?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: If the debt is expected to be repaid, whether the debtor is solvent, insolvent, bankrupt, or denying it with evidence, then when these funds reach their owner, the zakat for the past days is due, and God knows best.
