Question
I have silver that has been with me for thirteen years and I have not paid zakat on it before. I used to give charity sometimes with the intention of charity, not zakat. Now I have awakened from my negligence and learned that I owe zakat. I do not know how much zakat to pay on this silver, which weighs more than 85 grams. What is the value of the money, and do I have to pay for the previous years as a precaution?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: Zakat is obligatory upon you if the silver reaches the nisab, which is equal to (700) grams. Whoever possesses a nisab of it must pay a quarter of a tenth as zakat, and he should also pay zakat for the previous years. And God knows best.
