Question
Is the inherited wealth that the heir has not yet received considered a weak debt, so there is no zakat on it, or is it a medium debt, and zakat should be paid on it for the past years when it is received?
Answer
I say, and with Allah's guidance: Zakat is not obligatory on inherited wealth until it is received; thus, zakat is not due on it for the past. Al-Jassas said in the explanation of Al-Tahawi: (What is owned without compensation, such as inheritance, or with compensation that is not money, such as the dowry and the fee in khula, and the blood money for accidental killing, and intentional killing if a settlement is made, then zakat is not due on these matters until it is received, and a year passes after receipt). And Allah knows best.
