Question
A woman has five children and she is poor, and her husband is traveling. He is in financial difficulty and only sends her a little money at distant intervals. Is she required to pay Zakat al-Fitr, and is Zakat al-Fitr obligatory on the poor?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: Charity on behalf of children is obligatory for their father if he is financially capable. As for you, charity is not required since you are poor; charity is obligatory for the wealthy who possess what equals (100) grams of gold in addition to their basic needs. And God knows best.
