Question
Is it permissible to wipe over the socks for one who is obliged to perform ghusl due to janabah?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: It is not permissible to wipe over the two socks for one who is required to perform a full ablution due to major impurity; because it is a condition for the permissibility of wiping over them that the impurity is minor. If the impurity is major, such as menstruation or major impurity, then it is not permissible; because the permissibility of wiping in the case of minor impurity is to avoid hardship, as it occurs frequently and its presence is predominant, leading to hardship and difficulty in removing the socks. Major impurity does not have a predominant presence, so there is no hardship in removing them. Therefore, if there is a reason for full ablution, such as major impurity, menstruation, or postpartum bleeding, the wiping over the socks is invalidated, and both must be removed, and the entire body must be washed. Wiping over the socks can be renewed after putting them on again after completing the purification if one wishes to do so. It was narrated by Safwan bin 'Assal that he said: "The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to command us when we were traveling not to remove our socks for three days and their nights, except in the case of major impurity, but not for excretion, urination, or sleep," in Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 1: 13, and Sunan al-Nasa'i al-Kubra 1: 92, and Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1: 159. And from Anas, he said that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When one of you performs ablution and puts on his socks, he should pray in them and wipe over them, then he should not remove them unless he is in a state of major impurity," in Al-Mustadrak 1: 290, and it was authenticated.
