Question
Is it permissible to perform ablution with water that has been used to cook chickpeas or lentils?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: If water is cooked with the intention of eating, such as with chickpeas or lentils, and the water becomes thick to the extent that its nature of being thin, flowing, and nourishing is removed, such that it takes on another name other than water, it is no longer considered pure water, but rather restricted. It would be pure but not purifying for ritual impurity, meaning it is permissible to remove actual impurity from clothing and the body with it, but it is not permissible to perform ablution or bathing with it. The loss of its thinness is indicated by the fact that it cannot be wrung out from clothing, and the loss of its flowing nature is indicated by the fact that it does not flow over the limbs like water does. Refer to: 'Umdat al-Ri'ayah 1: 85, and God knows best.
