Question
Regarding sitting after the Fajr prayer until sunrise, the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever prays Fajr in congregation and then sits remembering Allah until the sun rises, then prays two rak'ahs, will have a reward like that of a complete Hajj and Umrah." If this is authentic, is it possible for me to pray voluntary prayers before Fajr? Is this statement correct? I read in the explanation of this hadith that after Fajr, voluntary prayers are valid, except after the sun rises?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: It is disliked to perform voluntary prayers after the dawn has risen, except for the two rak'ahs before performing the obligatory prayer. Narrated by Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with her, she said: "When the dawn broke, the Messenger of Allah would not pray except for two light rak'ahs" in Sahih Muslim 1: 500. And from Yasar, the freed slave of Ibn Umar, he said: "Ibn Umar saw me praying after the dawn had risen, and he said: O Yasar, how many rak'ahs have you prayed? I said: I do not know. He said: You should know that the Messenger of Allah - peace be upon him - came out to us while we were praying this prayer, and he said: Let those of you who are present convey to those who are absent that there is no prayer after the dawn except for two prostrations" in Musnad Ahmad 2: 104, and Sunan Abu Dawood 2: 25. The hadith I mentioned indicates the prayer of Shuruq, and its time is after the sun has risen, marking the end of the disliked time, and Allah knows best.
