Question
What is the ruling on traveling to Western countries to seek a livelihood?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: It is disliked to travel to non-Muslim countries for the purpose of seeking livelihood, for the little provision that suffices a Muslim is better than the abundant provision in non-Muslim countries; due to the trials therein. If the traveler does not become an infidel, his children or grandchildren may become infidels, as has indeed happened, or they may be greatly tempted regarding their religion. Therefore, every Muslim should choose what is best for his religion, not for his livelihood; for this world is a place of travel, not a permanent abode, and God knows best.
