The Triad of Washing the Parts

Question
Is it necessary to wash the parts of ablution three times?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: The obligatory or required action for the parts of the ablution that are washed — which are the face, hands, and feet — is to wash them only once. As for repeating the washing of the washed parts three times, it is a Sunnah, and it is not Sunnah to repeat the wiping of the head; repeating it with different waters is an innovation. It was narrated from Amr ibn Shu'aib from his father from his grandfather: "A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, how is purification? So he called for water in a container, and he washed his hands three times, then he washed his face three times, then he washed his arms three times, then he wiped his head, and he put his two index fingers in his ears, and he wiped with his thumbs on the outer part of his ears, and with his index fingers on the inner part of his ears, then he washed his feet three times, then he said: This is how ablution is done; whoever adds to this or diminishes from it has wronged and done injustice, or has done injustice and wronged," in Sunan Abi Dawood 1/81, Sunan Ibn Majah 1/146, Sunan al-Nasa'i 1/88, Musnad Ahmad 2/180, and Sheikh Shu'ayb said: Authentic, and this chain is good. And from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "He performed ablution and washed his parts three times, and wiped his head once, and said: This is the ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)," in Sahih al-Bukhari 1: 82, Jami' al-Tirmidhi 1: 49, Sunan al-Kubra by al-Nasa'i 1: 102, Sunan Abi Dawood 1: 49, Sunan Ibn Majah 1: 150. See: Tabyin al-Haqaiq 1: 5. Al-Muhitar 1: 82, and Allah knows best.
