The Sunnah in the Adhan

Question
What is the Sunnah in the Adhan?
Answer
It is recommended in the call to prayer (adhan) to be moderate: that is, to take your time; because the adhan is to inform those who are absent about the time of prayer, and this is more effective when done with moderation. It was reported from Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said to Bilal: "When you call the adhan, be moderate in your call, and when you make the iqamah, be quick. And make the time between your adhan and iqamah sufficient for the eater to finish eating, the drinker to finish drinking, and the one who needs to relieve himself to do so." This is found in Al-Mustadrak 1: 320, and Al-Hakim said: Its chain of narration is not disputed. It is also in Sunan Al-Tirmidhi 1: 373, Musnad Abd Ibn Hamid 1: 310, and Al-Mu'jam Al-Awsat 2: 270. And from Abu Al-Zubair, may Allah be pleased with him, the muezzin of Al-Aqsa Mosque, he said: "Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, came to us and said: When you call the adhan, be moderate, and when you make the iqamah, be quick." This is in Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 1: 195, and its chain of narration is accepted as mentioned in I'laa As-Sunan 1: 104. See: Sharh Al-Wiqayah p. 140.
