Question
A sick and elderly woman cannot fast due to diabetes and hypertension, and she is poor. Her daughter's son wants to pay the expiation for fasting on her behalf. Is it permissible for him to give the expiation to his poor uncle who lives with his grandmother or not?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: If her grandson pays on her behalf, he acts as her agent in the payment, and she is the one who is actually paying. It is not permissible for her to give the Zakat al-Fitr to her son, and therefore he must give it to someone else for it to be valid on her behalf. And God knows best.
