The Rulings Related to the Talbiyah for Hajj

Question
What are the rulings related to the Talbiyah for Hajj?
Answer
There are eight rulings regarding the Talbiyah: 1. It is required that the Talbiyah be uttered with the tongue; if one mentions it in their heart, it will not be accepted. The mute is not required to move their tongue, and any mention intended to glorify Allah, such as saying "La ilaha illallah" (There is no deity but Allah), "Subhanallah" (Glory be to Allah), "Alhamdulillah" (Praise be to Allah), "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest), and others, can substitute for the Talbiyah. If one says "O Allah," it is sufficient. 2. It is permissible to mention and recite the Talbiyah in Arabic, Persian, and other languages. 3. Reciting the Talbiyah once is obligatory, and repeating it in the same gathering is a Sunnah. When circumstances change, such as at dawn, dusk, at dawn prayers, when entering or exiting, standing, sitting, and others, it is highly recommended. Increasing the recitation of the Talbiyah in general, without being restricted to a specific situation, is encouraged. 4. It is recommended to repeat the Talbiyah three times each time and to recite it in order without interjecting foreign speech, and it should not be interrupted by conversation. However, if one responds to a greeting during it, it is permissible. It is disliked for others to greet him, and one should not disrupt any part of the Sunnah Talbiyah, whether in its structure or grammar. If one adds to it with something narrated, it is recommended, such as saying: "Labbayk wa sa'dayk, wa al-khayru kulluhu biyadayk, wa al-raghba'u ilayk, Labbayk bi-hajjatin haqqan ta'abbudan wa riqaqan, wa Labbayk inna al-'aysha 'ayshu al-akhirah" and similar phrases. What is not narrated is good; it was reported from Ibn Umar that the Talbiyah of the Messenger of Allah was: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka Labbayk, inna al-hamda wa al-ni'mata laka wa al-mulk la sharika laka." Ibn Umar used to add: "Labbayk Labbayk wa sa'dayk, wa al-khayr biyadayk, Labbayk wa al-raghba'u ilayk wa al-'amal" [in Sahih Muslim 2: 841]. 5. It is recommended to frequently recite the Talbiyah while standing, sitting, riding, descending, standing still, walking, in a state of purity or ritual impurity, in a state of major or minor impurity, during changes in conditions and times, whenever ascending a height or descending into a valley, at the onset of night and day, during the pre-dawn hours, after obligatory and voluntary prayers, during every riding and dismounting, when meeting other pilgrims, and upon waking from sleep. Ibn Umar reported that he would recite the Talbiyah while riding, descending, and lying down [in Musnad al-Shafi'i p. 123, and Sunan al-Bayhaqi al-Kabir 5: 43], and Jabir reported that the Messenger of Allah would recite the Talbiyah when he met riders, or when he ascended a height, or when he descended into a valley, and at the end of the obligatory prayers, and at the end of the night [reported by Ibn Asakir in his compilation of the Hadiths of al-Muhadhdhab, and in its chain is someone unknown, but it has a supporting narration from Ibn Umar that he would recite the Talbiyah while riding, descending, and lying down. See: I'la al-Sunan 10: 40-41], and from Ibn Abbas: "The Prophet would recite the Talbiyah after the prayer" [in Jami' al-Tirmidhi 3: 182, and he said: Hasan Gharib, and Sunan al-Bayhaqi al-Kabir 5: 37, and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir 11: 434]. 6. If they are in a group, no one should follow the Talbiyah of another, as it confuses thoughts; rather, each person should recite the Talbiyah individually without following the voice of others. 7. It is recommended to raise one's voice with the Talbiyah unless one is in a city or is a woman, but one should not raise it to the point where their voice becomes strained and harms themselves. It was reported from al-Sa'ib ibn Khalid that the Prophet said: "Gabriel came to me and commanded me to instruct my companions to raise their voices with the Talbiyah and the Ihlal" [in Jami' al-Tirmidhi 3: 191, and he said: Hasan Sahih, and Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 4: 173, and Sahih Ibn Hibban 9: 111]. The Prophet also said to his companions when they exceeded the limit in raising their voices with Takbir during travel: "O people, be gentle with yourselves; you are not calling upon one who is deaf or absent; you are calling upon One who hears and is near, and He is with you" [in Sahih Muslim 4: 2076, and Sahih al-Bukhari 3: 1091]. 8. The Talbiyah is recited in the mosques of Mecca, Mina, and Arafat, but it is not recited during the Tawaf and Sa'i of Umrah, as engaging in the prescribed supplications at that time is better.
