Question
How do we distinguish between a binding oath and a frivolous oath? Sometimes, due to the pressures and excessive anger, I swear oaths without intending them, such as saying: (By God, I will slaughter you), (By God, I will deprive you of your allowance if you do not achieve a good result). What is the ruling on such oaths?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: A linguistic oath is made in the past if one believes it to be true, and it is binding for the future. However, in Jordanian society, the mention of oaths is common in their daily language, and they do not intend it as an oath; rather, it has become a habit of speech. Therefore, it should not be considered an oath due to their lack of intention to make it one. And God knows best.
