Question
A mother has two orphaned children and has not performed Aqiqah for them. There is someone who sponsors these children with a sum of money. Is it permissible for the mother to pay for the Aqiqah from this sponsorship money? And is there Zakat due on this sponsorship money since the mother collects it for the children?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: The aqeeqah is not prescribed in our school of thought, but rather it is an act of devotion like other acts of devotion in slaughtering for the sake of God Almighty. If the sponsorship is sufficient for that, it is permissible for her to slaughter for the sake of God Almighty for the children, and there is no zakat on the money collected from the sponsorship; because it belongs to the children, and there is no zakat on the child until he reaches maturity, and God knows best.
