The Ruling on Zakat for a Rented Apartment
Is there Zakat due on my rented apartment, from which I spend the rent on personal expenses and household necessities? Can monthly donations and charity serve as a substitute for Zakat?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: There is no zakat on rented apartments, but zakat becomes obligatory if one possesses the amount of the zakat threshold. There must be an intention for zakat at the time of payment, and donations do not suffice for zakat due to the lack of intention for zakat in them. And God knows best.
