Question
An Imam remembered in the first unit of a four-unit prayer that he was in a state of impurity, so he appointed someone to lead the prayer in his place and went to perform ablution. When he returned, the worshippers had completed their prayer, so he informed them that each one should perform one unit individually to complete their prayer. What is the ruling on the Imam's action?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: If the imam begins the prayer without purification, then his prayer and the prayer of the people are invalid, and they must start over. As for if his ablution is invalidated during the prayer, he should appoint another to lead the people in prayer, and God knows best.
