Question
I mentioned in today's prayer lesson that a woman's foot in prayer is not considered 'awrah, whereas outside of prayer it is 'awrah. However, we were raised to believe that the foot is 'awrah in prayer, and we exaggerated in covering the foot. Could you remind us of the evidence for this?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: The issue is controversial, and there is a well-known opinion in the school that it is considered 'awrah (nakedness), but due to necessity and severe hardship in covering, it has been shifted to the opinion that it is not 'awrah in prayer to make it easier for Muslims. And God knows best.
