The Ruling on Swearing by What is Forbidden
A husband said to his wife: 'You are forbidden to me if you smoke again.' Now he is afraid that she will smoke again. What is the ruling on this statement, and what should he do to avoid divorce?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: This is a divorce conditional upon a stipulation, and whenever the condition is met, the divorce occurs. She must not smoke so that it does not happen; otherwise, it will happen. And God knows best.
