The Ruling on Following a Jurisprudential School
Is it necessary for every Muslim to follow an imam from the four imams in order to simplify matters and understand obligations and legal rulings, or should we follow the Quran and Sunnah and what our religion, faith, and creed guide us to?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: The jurisprudential schools are sciences established to understand the Quran and the Sunnah. If we do not rely on them to understand the Quran and the Sunnah, our understanding will be based on whims; therefore, it is necessary for scholars and students of knowledge to follow one of the four schools, otherwise they will go astray and mislead others. And God knows best.
