Whoever among them is completely unable to fast should break their fast, and they must provide a compensation (fidya) as Allah says: (And upon those who are able to fast, a compensation of feeding a poor person) [Al-Baqarah: 184]. There is no requirement for making up the fast. As for those who can fast on some days of the month but not others, they should fast what they can and make up the days they missed after Ramadan whenever they are able to do so, and they do not owe any compensation. A patient who finds fasting during the long, hot summer days difficult but can make up the fast during the short winter days should break their fast, and they must make up the fast when they are able, without any compensation. It is a condition for allowing the breaking of the fast in Ramadan that there is a fear of worsening the illness, or a delay in recovery from the illness, or if they are healthy but fear that they will become ill due to fasting. Refer to Tabyin al-Haqaiq 1: 333.
