The Ruling on Engagement Gifts
If a woman's dowry at the time of the marriage contract was a gold coin; but at the wedding ceremony, the husband presented her with another gold ring, is this ring her right as part of the dowry or is it his right? Is he sinful if he takes it without her consent, or is she sinful if she claims it is her right?
Answer
I say, and with God's guidance: Whether it is considered part of the dowry or a gift, it is the woman's right, and the husband has no right to take it back. It is not permissible for him to take it, and if he does take it, he must return it because it is a debt he owes her. And God knows best.
