The Ruling on Adhering to a School of Thought

Question
Why do people adhere to a certain school of thought? Is the path of Salafism and Wahhabism correct?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: Following a school of thought is a method of teaching and studying, and it is specific to students of knowledge, muftis, and teachers. A layperson does not have a school of thought; rather, their school of thought is that of their mufti. However, they should only ask a mufti who adheres to a school of thought; because the school of thought is the only way to understand religion through established rules, scholars, and approved books. Otherwise, understanding religion would be based on whims, with everyone saying what they wish, as is the case with Wahhabism. They issue fatwas based on their whims without knowledge or rules; therefore, their method is one of misguidance, which cannot be relied upon due to its manipulation of the Sharia. And God knows best.
