The Minimum Age for Sacrificial Animals

Question
What are the conditions for the sacrificial animal? Is it permissible for the sacrificial animal to be 6 months old?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: It is a condition for the sacrifice that the animal is free from severe defects; thus, the blind one is not permissible, nor the one with a clear eye defect, nor the lame one with a clear limp, which is the one that cannot walk on its leg to the place of sacrifice, nor the sick one with a clear illness, nor the emaciated one that is not fattened, which is the one that has no flesh, nor the one with a severed hand or foot, nor the one whose ear, tail, eye, or testicle has more than a third missing, unlike the hornless one, the castrated one, and the insane one; because reason is not the intended goal, but rather the meat is what is intended. It is only permissible if it is fat and there is nothing preventing it from grazing; otherwise, it is not valid, as stated in Hasan al-Darayah 4: 93, and Lubab al-Manasik, pp. 522-523. It was narrated from Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Four animals are not valid for sacrifice: the one-eyed with a clear defect, the sick one with a clear illness, the lame one with a clear limp, and the broken one that cannot be fattened," in Al-Muwatta 2: 482, Al-Mujtaba 7: 214, and Musnad Ahmad 4: 284. It is not valid for the sheep to be less than a year old, except for the lamb, which is permissible if it is six months old, and Allah knows best.
