Question
What is meant by the verse {The Most Merciful ascended the Throne}? And is this evidence that God is in the heavens?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: The correct view is that the Throne is a tangible body created by God Almighty. "Tamakkun" refers to the presence of something firmly established in a place, and a "place" is something that a body relies on and settles upon. We believe that God Almighty ascended to the Throne, not in a way that comes to mind, but it is not permissible to describe His ascension as an ascension of stability, establishment, sitting, connection, or contact, nor that He is in any of the six directions with respect to the Throne or anything else. God is above the Throne, but not in the sense of spatial superiority or location, as physical superiority is impossible for Him due to its implication of corporeality and temporality, which necessitate dependence, and the Creator is exalted above that. God is above the Throne in a manner of honor and majesty. And God knows best.
