Question
I own 3 million dinars, and a year has passed on it. At the same time, I have a debt of eight hundred thousand dinars, and someone has taken on this debt for me and paid this amount to me to settle it. Does it become mine as soon as I receive it, and does it count as part of my wealth, making it subject to zakat?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: You are obligated to pay zakat on your original wealth after deducting the amount of the debt owed by you, as it is not subject to zakat. Any wealth that is gifted to you, if you accept it, must be zakat if a year has passed on it along with your wealth. And God knows best.
