The Impurity from Which Purity is Required for the Validity of Prayer

Question
What is the impurity from which purity is required for the validity of prayer?
Answer
First: Purification from ritual impurity: It is required to be pure from major impurity, which is achieved by performing a full wash (ghusl) from sexual impurity, menstruation, and postpartum bleeding, and this is called (major purification). Also, purification from minor impurity is required, which is done by performing ablution (wudu), and this is called (minor purification). This is applicable when water is available and one is able to use it for washing or ablution. In the absence of water, the obligatory purification is to perform dry ablution (tayammum); as Allah, the Almighty, says: (O you who have believed, when you rise to [offer] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself) Al-Ma'idah: 6. And it has been narrated from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: ((Prayer is not accepted without purification, nor is charity from ill-gotten gains)), in Sahih Muslim, 1: 203, and Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1: 51, and Sunan Ibn Majah 1: 100. And purification (with a ضم on the ط) means purity, which means that Allah, the Almighty, does not accept any prayer, whether obligatory or voluntary, except with purification, either by washing or by tayammum. Second: Purification from actual impurity: It is obligatory for the one praying to purify their body, clothing, and the place of prayer from any impurity before starting the prayer. See: Halabi Saghir, p. 7, and 'Umda al-Ri'aya 1: 156.
