Question
I follow the Hanafi school of thought, may Allah be pleased with them, and I live in Jordan where I am an imam of a mosque. It is known that the imam's recitation suffices for the congregation's recitation in our practice. However, when I tried to apply this, some of the worshippers told me: 'You do not leave us space to recite behind you in the audible prayer,' so I refrained and adopted the opinion of Imam Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him. Am I sinful in this case because I feared fitnah (temptation or discord)? Was what I did correct, and should I perform the prostration of forgetfulness due to my silence after Al-Fatiha as is established in our practice?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: You must adhere to the school of thought; for there is no fitna in that. Rather, you must teach the people about it gradually and calmly, informing them that the Sunnah has come with this, and God knows best.
