Question
Regarding the form of Witr prayer according to the esteemed Hanafis, is it established from the Prophet (peace be upon him) in this manner? It would be great to have the reference so we can argue with those who doubt or dispute.
Answer
I say, and with Allah's success: It has been established from the Prophet in this manner, as narrated by Abu bin Ka'b : "The Messenger of Allah used to pray the Witr with three rak'ahs, reciting in the first: {Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High}, in the second: {Say, O disbelievers}, and in the third: {Say, He is Allah, [who is] One}, and he would make the qunut before bowing) in Sunan al-Nasa'i al-Kubra 1: 448, and al-Mujtaba 3: 235. And from al-Hasan , he said: "Abu bin Ka'b used to pray Witr with three rak'ahs and would not greet (salute) except in the third, like the Maghrib" in Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq 3: 25. And from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, she said: "The Messenger of Allah would not greet (salute) in the two rak'ahs of Witr" in Sunan al-Nasa'i al-Kubra 1: 440, and al-Mujtaba 3: 234, and Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar 1: 280, and in another narration: "The Messenger of Allah would not greet (salute) in the first two rak'ahs of Witr" in al-Mustadrak 1: 446, and it was authenticated. And from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, she said: "The Messenger of Allah would pray Witr with three rak'ahs and would not greet (salute) except at the end of them," and this is "the Witr of the Commander of the Faithful, Umar , from whom the people of Medina took it" in al-Mustadrak 1: 447, and it was authenticated. And from Ibn Mas'ud , he said: "The Witr is three, like the Witr of the day, the Maghrib prayer" in Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar 1: 294, and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir 9: 282, and its chain is authentic, as in I'la al-Sunan 6: 47, and others, and Allah knows best.
