The Father's Estrangement Due to His Poor Treatment of His Children

Question
My father divorced my mother due to previous problems over the years, and he was very harsh in his treatment towards us, not providing for us or asking about us. Recently, he has been trying to contact us and get closer to us, but I do not wish to talk to him. Is it permissible for me to cut him off and ignore him, and does he have any rights over us?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: It is forbidden for you to cut him off, and you must be dutiful to him no matter what he does to you; because we are commanded to be dutiful to the disbelieving parent and to be good to him, and God knows best.
