Question
My son works in Turkey and is 20 years old. We are partners with him in a supermarket; we own two-thirds, and he owns one-third. He worked in remittances, which is a separate business from the supermarket. Suddenly, he lost all the money and has a lot of debts due to the remittance work. Does Islamic law require the father to pay for his son?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: The debt is obligatory on the son, not on the father, and the father is not required to pay on behalf of the son as an obligation, but rather as a recommendation and assistance to him. And God knows best.
