Question
Is there Zakat on the actions of the temporarily insane, and when does it become obligatory upon them if they regain their sanity?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: The actions of a person who has become insane after reaching adulthood; their obligation to pay zakat is lifted if their insanity lasts for a year. If their insanity does not last a full year, then the obligation to pay zakat remains, and they must fulfill it on time, as this insanity does not affect their obligation as long as it has not reached a full year. The obligation to pay zakat returns to them if they recover from their insanity and remain sane for a year. As stated in Tabyin al-Haqaiq (1: 252/253), and God knows best.
