Question
What is the amount of zakat due on crops and fruits?
Answer
In the matter, there is detail: The obligatory zakat on crops and fruits may be (10)% or (5)% depending on the farmer's situation regarding effort exerted or expenses paid for irrigating the land. If it is irrigated directly from rainwater or from a flood without the farmer bearing effort or incurring specific expenses for its irrigation, except for plowing and planting the land, its zakat is (10)%. However, if he irrigated it himself or spent on its irrigation, such as by installing pipes for watering vegetables and trees, its zakat is (5)%. If the crop is irrigated most of the year by flood, then it is one-tenth; if it is irrigated most of the year by a machine, then it is half of one-tenth; and if it is irrigated half the year by a machine and half of it without a machine, then it is also half of one-tenth. Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "What is irrigated by rain and springs or is one-tenth is one-tenth, and what is irrigated by sprinkling is half of one-tenth," in Sahih Bukhari 2: 540, and Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 4: 37. And Al-Sha'bi, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "What is irrigated by rain or by a flood is one-tenth, and what is irrigated by a bucket or a well or a sieve is half of one-tenth," in the reports of Abu Yusuf R117.
