Question
In 1990, during Iraq's occupation of Kuwait, most of the apartments in the building where I lived were empty of their owners. Amid the chaos that engulfed all places, I entered one of these apartments since it was abandoned by its owners and took some items from it, including a white gold ring, which I still keep. Do I have the right to use it or sell it and benefit from its price personally, knowing that I have no knowledge now of the whereabouts of the owners of this jewelry?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: If you are not able to return what you took to its owners, you must give it as charity on their behalf, and God knows best.
