Question
Please clarify how a layperson should approach the differences in rulings between schools of thought, for example, the ruling on owning a dog. Is it permissible to adopt what suits the individual, so we take from the school that does not prohibit dog ownership, and then take from another school on a different issue, and so on?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: A layperson must adhere to the school of thought of their mufti. If they are in a country where the muftis issue fatwas according to a specific school, they must follow what they are advised. It is not permissible for them to turn to other schools in order to preserve their faith, and God knows best.
