Question
Does the deceased get harmed if people step on their grave?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: It is disliked to walk or sit on the grave due to the disrespect it entails. It was said in Al-Fath: Sitting on the grave, stepping on it, and so on are disliked. Therefore, what one does when burying around their relatives, stepping on those graves until reaching the grave of their relative, is also disliked. Sleeping by the grave and relieving oneself is even more so, and everything that is not established in the Sunnah, while what is established is only visiting it and praying by it while standing. Ibn Abidin said: In the rulings from Al-Khalasah and others: If one finds a path and feels in their heart that it is an innovation, they should not walk on it; otherwise, there is no harm in it, as mentioned in Radd al-Muhtar 2: 345, and God knows best.
