Question
I have missed prayers that I have not made up, and does performing Hajj atone for the missed prayers? If not, and now I am sick and unable to make them up, is it permissible for me to give a compensation instead of making them up?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: Missed prayers can only be made up by actually performing them; they cannot be compensated for by pilgrimage or other means, because they are an obligation owed to God Almighty, and He can be compensated in any manner he is capable of in the prayers he performs, and it is valid even if it is done by gestures. If he is unable to gesture or fears that he will not be able to make them up completely, he must recommend paying a compensation for him for each prayer in the amount of half a sa' (a measure), which is equivalent to two dinars, and God knows best.
