Question
I am forty-seven years old, my menstrual cycle is irregular, lasting for fourteen days. Initially, the blood is weak and intermittent, then strong blood flows for seven days, after which the blood flow weakens and appears as spotting. Is all this duration considered menstruation? Is it permissible for me to follow the Shafi'i school in this matter?
Answer
I say, and with Allah's success: If it exceeds ten days, you should consider your previous menstruation in terms of count, and what exceeds that is considered irregular bleeding (istihada). There is no need to switch to another school of thought, and Allah knows best.
