Question
One of my friends is engaged and wants to cancel the engagement. She paid a dowry of 1500 dinars. Now, when she wants to cancel, should the mentioned amount be returned to the fiancé even though she is the one who requested the cancellation and not him?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: It is permissible for you to agree with him to return the amount and for him to divorce, or any arrangement between them that achieves the intended purpose. The original rule is that if the husband wants to divorce before consummation, he should pay the woman half of the dowry. And God knows best.
