Question
The people across the river have replaced the two Eid days with a day of mourning, meaning that if someone passes away, they mourn on the Eid days, recite the Quran over them, sacrifice a sheep for them, and weep for them. Some scholars among us say this is a good practice. What do you think about this?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: It is good for us to console the mourners, to alleviate their grief if this meaning can be achieved without any burden of food or hospitality or anything else. However, if it takes the form you mentioned of renewing condolences and wasting money, it should be opposed, forbidden, and warned against; because it contradicts the meanings of Islam and the guidance of the religion, and God knows best.
