Question
What do we say to the youth who break their fast and we intend to reform them? Should we tell them to fast two months for each day they missed, or what? And is the ruling in our time still the same as it was?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: The most important thing that these young people who do not fast in the month of Ramadan need is to remind them of God and the Day of Judgment, and to remind them also of God's many blessings and that death is a reality. If one of these young people wants to fast in this month of Ramadan, he must make up for the days he missed after Ramadan. It is not part of the invitation to talk to them initially about the expiation for fasting or making up the fast, but rather to encourage them towards faith. If we seek faith from them, we will ask for making up the fast and expiation. And God knows best.
