Recovering a debt from Zakat before giving it to the poor
A relative borrowed an amount of money from me and was unable to repay it. My husband has Zakat money that he wants to give as Zakat. Is it permissible for me to take the repayment amount from this Zakat before it is given to them, knowing that they do not know it is Zakat, my husband's Zakat money, and the amount owed to me?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: It is possible to give them your husband's zakat money and request repayment from it directly, or you can ask them if there is a specific amount for zakat for you, and whether they would allow me to repay the debt from it. If they accept, it is permissible, and God knows best.
