Recommended Actions During Stay in the Two Holy Mosques (Makkah and Madinah)

Question
What are the recommended actions to be taken during the stay in the Two Holy Mosques (Makkah and Madinah)?
Answer
Among the recommended practices are: 1. Increasing good deeds such as voluntary prayers, reciting the Quran, engaging in remembrance (dhikr), and maintaining contemplation; to multiply the rewards in the sacred precincts of Mecca, as well as in the sacred precincts of Medina. One should spend the night in prayer and revive the nights of his stay in Mecca and Medina, for they are the days that have been restored from the past. He should strive to frequent the mosque with diligence in worship, especially in attending the five daily prayers in congregation and performing i'tikaf (spiritual retreat). 2. Increasing fasting during his stay in both places. 3. Giving charity to the poor among their residents, especially those who live nearby and are settled in the sacred precinct. 4. Completing the Quran at least once in both places; because they are the places of revelation and the descent of the Quran, and one should not be preoccupied with markets and wasting time. 5. Looking at their people with a sense of reverence, without probing into their inner or outer states, leaving that to Allah Almighty, and loving them for their proximity, regardless of their condition, for the gravity of the offense does not strip the sanctity of proximity. 6. Continuously looking at the Kaaba and the noble chamber if possible, or at the magnificent dome if looking at the chamber is not feasible, for looking at them is an act of worship; as it has been narrated: "Looking at the Kaaba is an act of worship" [from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, in Al-Jami' Al-Saghir by Al-Suyuti, no. 14587, and in Akhbar Makkah by Al-Azraqi 2: 9: from Mujahid, who said: "Looking at the Kaaba is an act of worship, entering it is entering into a good deed, and exiting it is exiting from a bad deed," and in Kashf Al-Khafa 2: 397: "Looking at the Kaaba is an act of worship, looking at the face of one's parents is an act of worship, and looking into the Book of Allah is an act of worship," and see: Al-Mirqat 7: 3055], and "looking at the righteous is an act of worship" [narrated by Al-Tabarani and Al-Hakim from Abu Mas'ud and from Imran bin Husayn, may Allah be pleased with them, as in Al-Mirqat 7: 3055]. For whatever is looked at that indicates the truth and leads to it is an act of worship, as it has been narrated that the friends of Allah are those who, when they are seen, Allah is remembered. 7. Increasing the Tawaf (circumambulation) in the Sacred Mosque of Mecca. 8. Increasing prayers upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, in the city of Medina, and frequently visiting the Prophet, peace be upon him, without any dislike in that. See: Lubab Al-Manasik, pp. 565-569.
